Despite his best efforts, Cal's regressive impulses often sneak up on him without him realizing it - at least, not before it's far too late, and finds himself far too busy enjoying himself to care.

Following the Quickie where Cal debuted, having a very clear concept of the entire gimmick he was made for quickly helped with new ideas; or perhaps more accurately, drawing existing ideas in new, fun ways. Always surprises me when I learn more about all the different permutations of how my work gets done in this way, even to this day.
