Meet Isaac, Yasmin’s BF (Character Design WIP)

During my stream earlier this week, I put a concept to paper that had originally popped into my head as soon as I was done finalizing Yasmin's design. Given her personality and history, I knew that she would rely on others for some aspects of her life.

Without going too much into detail about that, I imagined her partner would be mostly tasked with taking care of her from time to time, in return for her enabling their rampantly hedonistic lifestyle. I'm not yet decided on exactly what special skills he would have, but it would likely consist of some kind of ability to transform others. I only want it in order to enable the relationship dynamic I have in mind for them, and keep it to a bare minimum.

The idea is that Yasmin could "borrow" his ability to change others and used it to tweak him just to her liking: namely, short and rather gifted. She keeps him that way unless the mood otherwise strikes - which it often does.

Here's the first series of concepts that I got done for him, along with a size comparison of the couple and the initial set of sketches I made while narrowing down the design.

As far as gender identity goes, calling him male works fine enough for him. Much like most other things, he doesn't care about it more than he needs to, which in this case isn't very much.

His look is pretty much set, but one detail I'm still toying with is the design of his markings. When I first got done putting down some colours on him, I realized that his look leaned a little closer to that of a red panda. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but not really what I was going for. He initially had two separate eye masks, as shown in the initial concepts above, but I later tried experimenting with a couple different looks.

I'm always in favour of simpler designs when I can get away with it; why make my life any harder if my goal is to draw these characters as often as I can, right? At the same time though, I don't want to pass up a small addition that might make him more recognizable in the long run. Nothing's stopping me from making changes later on, but the longer I can go without needing any, the better.

In any case, I'm not yet set on which of the three I like the most, so I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts you might have. For now though, say hi to Isaac; I hope you like him!
